Kosher Restaurants in Antwerp
Antwerp is home to one of Europe's largest and most observant Jewish communities, with roughly 15,000 mostly Haredi and Hasidic Jews clustered around the diamond district and the adjoining Jewish quarter. The result is a dense, year-round kosher scene of restaurants, pizzerias, falafel counters, bakeries and coffee shops packed into a few walkable streets. Most establishments operate under Machsike Hadass, the leading local kashrus authority, with several venues certified by the community's other bureau, Shomre Hadas. Nearly every place is closed on Shabbat and Jewish holidays.
Kosher venues cluster tightly in the 2018 postal district, split between the diamond district (Appelmansstraat, Simonstraat, Lange Kievitstraat) and the residential Jewish quarter running along Lange Herentalsestraat, Lange Leemstraat, Isabellalei, Belgielei and Mercatorstraat, all within a short walk of Antwerpen-Centraal station. Meat grills, dairy pizzerias, a falafel bar and old-world bakeries sit within a few blocks of each other. Plan around Shabbat and Yom Tov, when essentially every kosher business closes; hours are shortened on Friday afternoons, and some venues reopen only well after Shabbat ends in winter.
