Brooklyn has the most, a deep everyday scene through Flatbush, Midwood, Boro Park, and Crown Heights. Manhattan is smaller but holds the marquee steakhouses and the Midtown lunch spots. Queens is a world of its own, spread across Kew Gardens Hills, Forest Hills, Fresh Meadows, Rego Park, and Flushing.

Out on Long Island, Great Neck anchors a large Persian Jewish community, and the Five Towns just to the east are their own dense hub. Monsey, up in Rockland, fills in the north. Because it is all so spread out, pick your base by which community you are visiting rather than expecting one walkable center.

Certification: the OU and the locals

The OU is the national name you will see most, alongside Kof-K and a set of local vaadim, the VHQ in Queens, the Vaad of the Five Towns, and others. A restaurant's hechsher usually tracks its neighborhood's vaad. Standards differ between agencies, so if a specific one matters to you, check the certificate rather than assuming the borough default.

Getting around and Shabbat

Because the scene is so spread out, you will often be on the subway or in a car to get between the boroughs and the suburbs.
