Vienna's kosher scene is compact and almost entirely concentrated in the 2nd district, Leopoldstadt, historically the heart of Jewish Vienna and today home to the Karmeliterviertel cluster of restaurants, bakeries, delis and ice cream shops along Taborstrasse, Rotensterngasse and the surrounding lanes. A smaller cluster sits in the 1st district near the Stadttempel synagogue. Supervision is provided by the Vienna Jewish Community (IKG) rabbinate, the strictly Orthodox Machsike Hadass, Chabad Vienna and several private rabbinical authorities such as Rav Aminov and Khal Israel (Rabbi Schwartz). Almost every kosher venue is walkable within Leopoldstadt (2nd district), most within a few blocks of Taborstrasse and the Karmelitermarkt, with a couple more near the Stadttempel in the 1st district. Many places keep short hours and close early on Friday for Shabbat, with some offering pre-ordered Shabbat meals or Thursday and Friday prepared-food markets. Because kitchens shut for Shabbat, plan Friday night and Saturday meals in advance, and confirm hours directly since they shift seasonally.
