Tzfat, also spelled Safed, is a mystical hilltop city in the Galilee known as the birthplace of Kabbalah and today a magnet for artists, spiritual seekers, and religious tourists. Its kosher food scene is concentrated in the cobbled Old City and the artist quarter and along Jerusalem Street (the Midrachov), ranging from vegetarian health cafes to Ashkenazi meat restaurants and pizza and falafel spots. Because Tzfat has a large Haredi and observant population, most eateries carry a strict certification, with local Badatz Tzfat, Badatz Eida HaChareidis, and Badatz HaRav Machpud alongside the standard Rabbanut Tzfat. Diners will find that much of the city is Mehadrin or Badatz rather than basic Rabbanut.

Traveler's note

The two main clusters are the Old City and artist quarter (around Kikar HaMeginim and HaAri Street) and Jerusalem Street, the pedestrian Midrachov where most cafes, pizza, falafel, and takeout are found within a short walk. Almost everything closes early Friday afternoon and stays shut through Shabbat, reopening Saturday night, so plan meals accordingly. Portions of the Old City are steep and stepped, so cluster your dining on foot rather than driving. Many meat and takeout spots run pre-Shabbat menus of cholent and salads for guests.
