Haifa is Israel's third largest city and its northern capital, and like most of Israel the great majority of its restaurants are kosher. The tourist-friendly clusters are Carmel Center (Merkaz HaCarmel) along Sderot HaNasi near the Bahai Gardens, the lively cafe strip of the German Colony at the foot of the gardens, and the older Hadar HaCarmel district downhill. Most eateries carry a standard teudah from Rabbanut Haifa (the municipal religious council), while a smaller number hold Mehadrin certification such as Beit Yosef or the Union of Haifa Community Rabbis, and the big hotel dining rooms run under the Chief Rabbinate (Rabbanut Rashit).

Traveler's note

Kosher dining concentrates in Carmel Center around Sderot HaNasi and the Horev Center, in the German Colony on Ben Gurion Boulevard, and in the Haifa Bay (Mifraz) commercial zone where the steakhouses sit. Nearly all kosher restaurants close from Friday afternoon through Saturday evening for Shabbat and typically reopen an hour or two after nightfall on Saturday. The Carmelit funicular and the Metronit bus lines connect the upper Carmel to Hadar and downtown, but note that public transport also pauses on Shabbat.
