Lyon has France's third-largest Jewish community and a genuinely lively kosher scene, concentrated far more in the neighboring city of Villeurbanne than in central Lyon. The vast majority of eateries are certified by the Beth Din de Lyon, the rabbinical court of the Consistoire Regional de Lyon, with a handful of establishments linked to the local Chabad-Loubavitch community. You will find everything from Israeli lafa counters and grill houses to kosher sushi chains, pizzerias, and bakeries.

Traveler's note

Kosher venues cluster heavily in Villeurbanne, especially around the Gratte-Ciel district, rue Alexandre Boutin, rue du 4 aout 1789, and rue Francis de Pressense, with a second cluster in Lyon's 6th arrondissement near the Parc de la Tete d'Or and the Brotteaux. Most meat restaurants close Friday afternoon and all day Saturday for Shabbat, so plan Friday takeaway in advance. The main synagogues, the Beth Din, and Chabad houses are all within walking distance of the Villeurbanne cluster, which is well served by the tram and metro.
