Melbourne is home to one of the largest and most observant Jewish communities outside Israel and the United States, and it supports a deep bench of certified kosher eateries. The scene is concentrated in the southeastern suburbs of Caulfield, Elsternwick, Balaclava, Ripponlea and St Kilda East, spanning fine dining, Israeli grills, dairy cafes, pizzerias and long-standing bagel bakeries. Kosher Australia (KA) is the dominant kashrut authority, with the strictly Orthodox Adass Israel supervising several Balaclava and Ripponlea bakeries.

Traveler's note

Almost every kosher venue sits within the Glen Eira council belt, clustered along Carlisle Street (Balaclava), Glen Huntly Road (Elsternwick and Caulfield South), Hawthorn Road and Kooyong Road (Caulfield), and Glen Eira Road (Ripponlea). The area is walkable and close to numerous synagogues, which matters on Shabbat. Kosher eateries close early Friday afternoon and all day Saturday, reopening Saturday night or Sunday, so plan Shabbat meals through caterers or hotels in advance.
